Encompasses the use of appliances to help correct gross skeletal problems prior to the use of traditional orthodontics. Furthermore, functional orthodontics allows for the treatment of many chronic head and neck pains, and sleep apnea. If your child has had their tonsils and adenoids removed, there is a high chance of having a narrow dental arch. A narrow dental arch may be predisposing your child to have snoring or even sleep apnea. If left untreated, children with this narrow dental arch can eventually become adults with sleep apnea. Sleep Apnea is the stopping of breathing for more than 10 seconds during sleep. Sleep apnea has been linked to high blood pressure, anxiety, nervousness, poor sleep, diabetes, and heart attack. If you have been in a motor vehicle accident or encountered some sort of head trauma, there may become an imbalance in the functional movement of your 28 skull bones. Functional orthodontics can help rebalance and restore the functionality of the skull, thereby, reducing or eliminating years of chronic chronic head pain.
