Bad filling causes need for Crown

Bad filling causes need for Crown
Added: February 19, 2008 - 6:29 PM
By: Patient Email Withheld, Arlington, DC
Need Dentist / Specialist: No
Provide Cost Estimate: Yes
X-rays Available: Yes
Case Summary
Crown
Teeth: 2
Last Full Mouth X-Ray: 02/15/2008
Last Cleaning: 02/15/2008
Case Description
I had a filling put in a little over 2 years ago and there has been some discomfort due to pressure under the filling. I saw a dentist who said that he thinks the pressure will eventually cause the tooth to split. He says that I need to have it crowned and that it will cost 158 for the buildup and 601 for the crown(porcelain fused to pred. base metal). Is this a pretty standard charge? Does anyone know if there is a less expensive solution to this problem?

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

W/o seeing the tooth or an X-ray, it''''s hard to say if there is another solution. As for the fees quoted for a buildup and crown, they are quite reasonable for this area and perhaps even a little lower than average for many practices around.

Good luck

I cannot comment on your need for a crown or the Dx: "bad filling causes need for Crown," but the fee you quoted for a crown is really low. Most dentists fees are over $1000 for a crown and $200-$400 for the build up.

Sir, I think you need a better diagnosis(dx), as it sounds a little suspicious. You may not need a crown, but just a filing replacement. Alternatively you may need a root canal and a crown. Keep in mind, a definite dx may not be able to be made until removing the existing filling and re-evaluating symptoms afterwards.

Best of luck!

Often the filling needs to be redone and the pressure will go away, unless the dentist knows there is a crack.

If the tooth has a crack it needs a crown and build up and that is a very very good price

The price quoted is very reasonable. Fractures are tough to diagnose. One or two xrays of course. I would remove the filling and replace with a medicated filling .... wait a week or two .. .then check for any discomfort and its vitality. It may or may not need root canal therapy. If the ok ...Replace w/ a permanent restoration .
