Case Description
I had a filling done on a cavity 3 weeks ago. Cavity was so deep it just escaped a root canal. For 2 weeks, there was sensitivity that vanished fairly fast. Then a few days ago I had continuous pain/sensitivity for a few hours. It subsided to being very sensitive - so I have been managing by adjusting the temperature of food, avoiding biting on that side etc. Today morning there was continuous pain/sensitivity for an hour. ===================================================== Thanks very much for your replies. Based on that, I went to see a dentist. He did a radiograph and found that the cavity was far enough removed from the nerve (1.2mm) to not warrant a root canal. He said that the pulp chamber was inflamed (not infected). He wasn't sure about how it would progress - the pain might get better, might get worse, might go away and come back etc.
I am using Arnica Montana 6X which has been very effective in reducing sensitivity and pain. Also doing salt water gargling, oil pulling, as well as using Sensodyne.

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description,
special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more
reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors.
Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Dear Sir or Madam,I am sorry to hear that you are not feeling well. Occasionally, even after removing most of the bacteria from a cavity, the tooth can still become infected. Prolonged, throbbing sensitivity to hot and cold is pathonomic for a pulpal infection. In essence, the bacteria have traveled through the outer layers of the tooth into the pulp causing inflammation. The treatment is always a root canal. In Fall Church, I believe there is a great endodontist (specialist in root canals): Dr. Richard Pollack.Wishing you the best of luck.Neal KravitzOrthodontist, South Riding VA.nealkravitz@gmail.com

See your dentist so he can check it out. An xray should be taken. It might not show the need for Root canal treatment, but your discription of what''''s taking place does. Your dentist tried to avoid the need for the Root Canal, but when the decay is so deep it gets beyond his control. After the root canal, the tooth will need a foundation and a crown.Root canal $1300foundation $ 400crown $1325Please be advised that without a clinical exam and xray I can''''t determine your exact needs. Good luck

It''''s entirely possible that the nerve was, in fact, irreversibly affected and will require a root canal (and subsequent crown) for a comfortable outcome. You could try to replace the filling w/a temporary material that tends to be more soothing to the tooth, but the potential benefit may be negated by the repeated treatment. In general, if you are experiencing spontaneous pain or extended (more than a minute or so) sensitivity to temperature, it''''s likely that a root canal is indicated. All the best
