Case Description
My spouse has been experiencing left side jaw pain for the last couple of weeks...it doesn't appear upon inspection to be tooth related (no swelling, no redness or interior mouth irritation). There are 2 fillings in the lower molars on that side, however, they don't appear to be loose or fractured. Warm compresses have subsided the pain mostly, and teeth grinding isn't an apparent problem. Any insights? Do not have dental insurance so I'm wondering what the next step should be...Appreciate any advice...solutions.

Are You This Patient?
When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description,
special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more
reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors.
Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

You should probably make a quick consult appointment w/ a dentist nearby. A quick X-ray and clinical test can probably reveal if there is damage to the pulp or if the discomfort may be non-dental in origin. Good luck

Hello,Sorry to hear about your spouse''''s pain. If the pain is tooth related, any competent dentist should be able to diagnose and treat the problem. If dental problems are ruled out, it''''s possible there may be a TMJ problem. In that case you should schedule a consult with a dentist trained in TMJ issues. A good resource is the American Academy of CranioFacial Pain, www.AACFP.org.If it is TMJ pain, medical insurance rather than dental insurance should be billed.Best of luck,Dr. Michael RogersArlington, VA

Hello,There are many different causes for jaw tenderness. I would have to examine your wife, obtain a good history, check for symptoms, check the jaw motion during opening and closing,.... and take a panoramic x-ray to be able to give you an answer. The consultation takes about 30 minutes and it is complimentary. Please call our office so that we can schedule a convenient time for you and your wife to come in.Dr. Saba

You need to go see a dentist and have x-rays and an exam. In the long run, you will cost yourself more money and pain by neglecting dental care because you "do not have insurance."
