2 teeth needed crowns, didn't get them, now...?
Added: June 04, 2008 - 6:39 AM
By: Patient Email Withheld, Alexandria, Va, DC
Need Dentist / Specialist: Yes
Provide Cost Estimate: Yes
X-rays Available: No
Case Summary
Root Canal Crown
Teeth: 1,2
Case Description
So, my back two teeth on the upper right side both had root canals (at least 6 mths apart, maybe closer to a year) and needed crowns. I never got the crowns done. One, I couldn't afford them (kind of still can't). Two, the last dentist I went to basically made me afraid to ever see a dentist again (and I'd been a model dental patient all of my life). So what's happened is the filling material in both teeth has slowly worn away to the point that I now have two holes in these teeth. I know I need to get it fixed, but I have very limited dental insurance and most of this is going to come out of pocket. I guess I'm trying to get a sense of what's going to happen now - can these teeth be salvaged, can be crowns applied, do I need root canals again? Also, is there anyway way to tell how painful this experience will be and approximately how much I can expect to pay? I appreciate any advice. Thanks.

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

A simple Xray and clinical peek should determine if the teeth can still be salvaged, with or without having to redo the root canals. If so, routine procedures called a buildup and crown can put everything back in order. With poor insurance benefits, it can run a bit high out-of-pocket, but the alternative is to wait longer and increase the risk of losing those teeth or having to redo the root canals before proceeding.

As for the anxiety and pain issues, with all the dental offices in the area, you''''re bound to find one that is comfortable personally and physically - and might offer financing options like CareCredit or Capital One plans.

It is hard to say what you will need done. You may need to re-do the root canals, but they may still be ok. Without crowns, your teeth can also crack and they may be unrestorable. In short, you need to have an x-ray and an exam. Your best case scenario, is you will only need fillings and crowns. We have 3rd party financing as many offices do to help with the expenses. If you neglect to treat the teeth, you will definitely lose them. If you cannot afford treatment it is better to extract the teeth. As an FYI, all back teeth with root canals need crowns or they will break. Do not do a root canal if you cannot afford or are unwilling to pay for the crown. It is a waste of time and money. Once you need a root canal, you need to either do a root canal and crown or extract the tooth. Making no decision at all is a decision to extract..

To be able to help you, the teeth and their x-rays need to be examined. It is so sad to hear that you didn''''t have a comfortable visit last time at dentist office. We would do our best to keep you as comfortable as possible. We could also provide you with different financial options to keep your monthly payment affordable. I could offer you a Free Consultation. Bring any x-rays you have.

I look forward to seeing you at your earliest convenience.

A limited exam and xray should determine the cost and treatment of the teeth in question. Delaying treatment may cost more $$ and or eventual lost of these teeth. You may finance your dental treatment thru capital one health care finance, which is not uncommon these days. Feel free to call or visit us. We will be happy to treat and take good care of you.
